Lauren Maxwell, a Sterling, VA native, earned her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Marymount University in Arlington, VA and her bachelor’s degree in psychology from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. Lauren is an active member of multiple professional counseling organizations including the American Counseling Association and is also a national certified counselor (NCC). She is working toward licensure in the state of Virginia.
Lauren views therapy as a valuable time of self-discovery, healing, and growth. Utilizing a variety of techniques and subscribing to a Psychodynamic theory of counseling, Lauren helps to empower her clients by facilitating the development of client autonomy, physical, mental, and emotional awareness, and emotional experience in a safe and nonjudgmental space. Lauren’s clients will gain a better understanding of how their thoughts and emotions affect their daily lives and their relationships with themselves and others.
Lauren is trained in incorporating expressive arts techniques such as art and sand tray therapy into her work with clients, in addition to Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Gestalt Therapy, and Existential Therapy. Lauren specializes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, ADHD, unresolved emotional trauma, developing healthy social skills and boundaries, emotion regulation, issues concerning multiculturalism and spirituality, and grief and loss.
In her free time, Lauren enjoys playing guitar and piano, dancing, traveling, meditating, and spending time with her family and friends.
